It also believes that the Cyprus question and the Greco-Turkish dispute in the Aegean should be resolved through peaceful means.

"The Sixth Fleet patrols throughout the Mediterranean to provide naval presence and we believe that naval presence can advance peace and stability in the area," US Defence Department spokesman, Kenneth Bacon, has said.

He did not wish to elaborate any further on the matter. Speaking at the regular briefing, Bacon said US policy on Cyprus and the Aegean Sea is that "any disputes there will be resolved peacefully."

Bacon pointed out that the US has been "at the forefront of trying to work for peaceful resolution of those disputes" and expressed the hope that "Greece and Turkey will work with us for peaceful resolution of those disputes."

The spokesman's comments come in the wake of statements by US Vice Admiral Daniel Murphy to the Washington Post that the Sixth Fleet is monitoring the situation in volatile places such as Cyprus and Albania and could intervene to avert hostilities.

Murphy also warned that the US is watching and will know who is responsible for starting any conflict.

Commenting on the Vice Admiral's views, Bacon said Murphy was talking about "a naval presence and the calming effect that it can have in various areas of the world."

"Our policy is very clear, we are looking for peaceful resolution of both the Cyprus dispute and of any disputes that might involve the Aegean," Bacon told the press.

Antigoni Papadopoulou, Mayor of Morphou, handed today a resolution, condemning Turkish intransigence and the negative attitude of Turkish Cypriot Rauf Denktash, to the embassies of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

"We condemn the new provocative action of the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime to establish a separate district in the Morphou area", said the resolution, which was also delivered to the European Union delegation here and the UN.

It added this action proves the lack of will on the part of the Turkish Cypriot regime to promote a Cyprus settlement.

The resolution called on the permanent members of the UN Security Council to exert pressure on Turkey to change its attitude and work for a just solution which will secure "the independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the legal Republic of Cyprus".

Speaking to the Russian Charge d'affaires, Sergey Rokov, Papadopoulou said that for the 24th year running, the people of Morphou protest the continuing occupation of part of Cyprus and the lack of progress in trying to ascertain the fate of persons listed as missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

The Mayor said 140 of the 1,618 persons missing come from the Morphou region.

Furthermore, she referred to the appalling living conditions of enclaved Greek Cypriots in the Turkish occupied part of the island and said their numbers are rapidly decreasing.

On his part, Rokov reiterated that his country is working for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, including a resolution of all humanitarian problems.

"You can rest assure that we will support, and do support, the just struggle of the Cyprus people, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots", he added.

Handing a resolution to the French embassy, Papadopoulou said for the past 24 years, "we have been listening to promises and have seen a lot of resolutions about Cyprus but the refugees are still refugees, the missing are still missing and the number of enclaved people is being reduced year after year".

The French Charge d'Affaires promised to convey her message to the Foreign Ministry.

The people of Morphou will gather tonight at the chapel of Panagia in Makedonitissa, a Nicosia suburb, to pray for the missing and those who died during the Turkish invasion. A march will follow to the military cemetery in the area.
