    [01] Radiomarathon '98 ends

Nicosia, Nov 4 (CNA) -- Over one million pounds have been collected in the ninth annual Radiomarathon organised for children with special needs. (One Cyprus pound is about two US dollars)

However, the organisers, the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) and the Popular Bank, believe the amount will be higher after all the money collected in Cyprus and abroad is counted.

The two-day event ended midnight with the promise that next year's Radiomarathon will be held in cooperation with radio and TV stations in Greece.

Last year the Radiomarathon raised over 1,2 million Cyprus pounds. The organisers expressed satisfaction with the event, noting that over the past years it has managed to make the people of Cyprus, and especially the younger generation, aware of the problems that their compatriots with special needs face.

[02] Greek Americans - President Clinton - Letter

Nicosia, Nov 4 (CNA) -- Greek American leaders have told US President Bill Clinton that his "strong personal involvement will be necessary to move the Cyprus issue forward toward peace."

In a letter to the US President, they say that "Cyprus now stands alone... since your breakthrough for peace in Northern Ireland and in the Middle East."

The leaders of the Greek American community point out that President Clinton and his Special Emissary for Cyprus Richard Holbrooke are capable of making Ankara see that it is in its interest to end its 24-year Turkish occupation of 37 per cent of the island's territory.

They say that President Clinton and Holbrooke are capable of "creating a situation wherein the government of Turkey will be able to see what is seen by the rest of the world - that it is in Turkey's vested interest to end what Holbrooke describes as their 'intransigent positions' on a Cyprus settlement and their 24-year-long military occupation of Cyprus."

They called on the American President to meet with congressional leaders on this issue and the Hellenic-American community "to provide some ideas for opportunities for progress."

The letter, released yesterday, is signed by presidents of the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus and the Pancyprian Association of America, Philip Christopher, the Council of Hellenes Abroad, Andrew Athens, and the National Coordinated Effort of Hellenes Andrew Manatos.

    [03] Kasoulides - UN

London, Nov 4 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has welcomed the latest initiative by UN Resident Representative, Dame Ann Hercus, saying that Dame Ann's work is the development of a process for contacts with both parties in Cyprus.

He said that Dame Ann's initiative aims at both the resumption of talks and the reduction of tension on the island.

Speaking last night at the annual dinner organised by the Cypriot Brotherhood in Britain for members of parliament, on the occasion of Cyprus' independence Day, Kasoulides said that it is the firm position of the Cyprus government that to reduce tension in Cyprus, one has to tackle first the question of the reduction of foreign troops, armaments and defence spending.

He added that the government is concerned with security for now and for the future, security before, during and after the solution of the Cyprus problem.

Kasoulides stressed that the Greek Cypriot side believes certain issues which could lead to tension could be tackled now, as the essence lies in the reduction of foreign troops, armaments and defence spending.

He agreed with a proposal put forward by Europe MP Pauline Green for European Union funds to be used to clear land mines along the buffer zone in Cyprus.

Kasoulides expressed appreciation for British support so far, both as regards the Cyprus problem and the island's European Union accession course.

He made special reference to the support of the British presidency of the EU, which has inspired Cyprus with greater expectations for continuous support from all the island's friends.

Present at the dinner were 50 members of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, among which were the Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport, Chris Smith, as well as shadow Foreign Secretary, Michael Howard.

The event was presided over by the President of the Cypriot Brotherhood, Haris Sofoklides.

    [04] Weizman - Departure

Larnaca, Nov 4 (CNA) -- Israeli President Ezer Weizman left Cyprus today after a three-day state visit.

President Glafcos Clerides, House President Spyros Kyprianou, members of the cabinet, party leaders or representatives and other officials were present at the departure ceremony, at Larnaca Airport.

No statements were made. President Weizman had flown to the airport by helicopter.

Meanwhile, two Israeli policemen, a doctor and a photographer, members of Weizman's entourage, were involved in a traffic accident while on their way to the airport. No one was injured.

The Cyprus government described Weizman's visit as "very important" in the efforts to develop further bilateral relations and cooperation.

During his stay on the island, the Israeli President held talks with President Clerides and had meetings with House President Spyros Kyprianou, Archbishop Chrysostomos, and party leaders.
