[01] Cyprus - New Turkish violations

Nicosia, Nov 23 (CNA) -- Turkish military aircraft violated yesterday Cyprus' airspace flying on their way to Israel.

Twenty-four Turkish military aircraft and three re-fueling aircraft set off from their base, in southern Turkey, and flew over the northern tip of the island, violating the Republic's airspace.

The Turkish aircraft returned to Turkey later in the day following the same route, Cyprus Defence Ministry sources confirmed to CNA.

Turkey and Israel have signed a military cooperation agreement, strongly opposed by the Arab nations in the region.

Turkey retains some 30.000 troops in the northern part of the island which it occupies since it invaded the island in 1974, despite repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

[02] Women - Protest - Human Rights Declaration

Nicosia, Nov 23 (CNA) -- The women of Cyprus will demonstrate against continuing human rights' violations by Turkey having the head-scurf worn by the mothers of missing persons as their banner.

Announcing a series of events organised to mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, one of the women's representatives stressed here today that the aim is to enlighten people abroad of human rights' violations in Cyprus committed by the Turkish occupation troops.

Christina Demetriades said 1.619 head-scurfs will be woven and signed to be used as petitions to international decision-making centres.

A total of 1.619 people were listed as missing persons soon after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in summer 1974.

The scarfs will also be handed to the Ambassadors in Cyprus of the five UN Security Council permanent members and UN resident representative Dame Ann Hercus, House President Spyros Kyprianou and parliamentary party leaders.

Turkish troops invaded Cyprus in 1974 and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.

Despite repeated UN resolutions calling for the withdrawal of Turkish troops, some 30.000 still remain in the northern part of the island.

    [03] Cyprus - US - Globe Agreement

Nicosia, Nov 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus and the US will sign a scientific agreement enabling Cyprus to participate in the GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) programme.

The agreement will be signed tomorrow by Education and Culture Minister, Lykourgos Kappas, on behalf of the Cyprus Republic, and US Ambassador in Nicosia Kenneth Brill, on behalf of the US government.

GLOBE is an international environmental science and education programme that brings students, teachers and scientists together to study the global environment.

It has created an international network of students at primary, middle and secondary school levels for studying environmental issues, making environmental measurements and sharing useful environmental data with one another and the international science community.

The objectives of the programme are to increase student awareness of global environment, contribute to increased scientific understanding of the earth and support improved student achievement in science and mathematics.

Implementation of the agreement will be a coordinated effort between the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Cyprus Ministry of Education.
