[01] Israelis - Espionage - Hearing postponed
Larnaca, Dec 8 (CNA) -- The Assize Court postponed for December 21 the
hearing into the case of two Israeli nationals charged with spying against
the Cyprus Republic's National Guard.
Amid tight security measures, Udi Hargov, 37, and Igal Damary, 49,
appeared at the Assize Court in Larnaca, where their lawyer asked for more
time to study the charges against his clients.
The two were charged on November 20 with spying, conspiracy to spy and
possession of banned listening equipment.
They remain in custody despite a request by the Israeli government to
be granted bail.
The two Israelis were arrested on November 9 at the fishing village of
Zygi on the southern coast. The Court had said the accused intended "to
harm the safety or the interests of the Cyprus Republic".
Spying carries a maximum sentence upon conviction of 10 years in
prison under Cyprus law.
