CNA MA/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1600:CYPPRESS:02[02] Spokesman - MissilesNicosia, Jan 13 (CNA) -- Consultations among Cyprus, Greece and Russian are taking place in a bid to amend the terms of a contract relating to the purchase and deployment of Russian missiles in Cyprus in order to allow their deployment in the Greek island of Crete."There are consultations among the three contracting parties. Discussions are taking place on the basis of a joint decision between Greece and Cyprus," Government Spokesman, Christos Stylianides, said after today's cabinet meeting. Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides announced in late December that the SAMs (surface to air missiles) will not be deployed in Cyprus and that there will be consultations with Russia about their possible deployment in Crete. Asked how these consultations are being conducted, Stylianides said "there are ways and means" but refrained from disclosing any details, noting he does not wish to comment on defence or security matters. The spokesman's comments came following a dispatch by the Russian news agency Novosti that the Russian government has not replied to a formal request from the government of Cyprus to modify the provisions of the purchase contact relating to the missiles. Novosti, quoting sources close to the Russian defence ministry, pointed out that the delay in the Russian response does not necessarily mean a negative reply to the Cypriot request. The same sources also noted that Russia's political and military leadership needs to reassess the situation, taking into account that Greece is a NATO member and lies within NATO's zone of responsibility.
