    [01] Moslem Pilgrims - Mosque

Nicosia, Jan 20 (CNA) -- Moslem people living in the Turkish-occupied northern part of the island crossed today to the government-controlled areas to visit one of the most holy shrines in Islam, the Hala Sultan Tekke.

The 1280 pilgrims will travel to the Mosque, situated near a salt lake in the southern coastal town of Larnaca, on 26 buses.

Members of the Pancyprian Anti-Occupation Movement were distributing leaflets at the Ledra Palace checkpoint in Nicosia, welcoming the moslem pilgrims, urging them to join forces to struggle for a free peaceful and united country.

Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

The pilgrims are scheduled to return to the Turkish-occupied areas later in the afternoon.

The Hala Sultan Tekke was built in memory of Umm Haram, an aunt of Prophet Mohammed, who was killed falling off her mule during one of the frequent Arab raids against Cyprus.

[03] Cyprus - Mediterranean Student Congress

    by Anna Andreou

Nicosia, Jan 20 (CNA) -- The first Mediterranean Student Congress will take place between February 15 - 19, 1999, at the University of Cyprus, in Nicosia.

Organised by the Students Union of the University of Cyprus, the Congress will attract some 100 University students from most of the Mediterranean and some European countries, representing a variety of cultures, nations and civilisations.

Students from Spain, Yugoslavia, Albania, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Greece, Palestine, Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon and Malta have already announced their participation. Cyprus will be represented by 25 students.

The European students organisation AEGEE will be represented by a delegation of 20 to 30 students, who will participate under the observer's status.

Stelios Georgiadis, General Coordinator of the Congress, told CNA it is the first students' congress to be organised in Cyprus and expressed the hope that others will follow.

He said the Congress will be an opportunity for the students from different Mediterranean and European countries to meet and exchange views.

"The role of our generation in the region requires the exchange of ideas, thoughts and experience in order to secure peace, prosperity and understanding", Georgiadis noted.

The Congress will also be an opportunity to promote the Cyprus problem and the University of Cyprus, he added.

Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has been invited to address the opening ceremony of the Congress.

During the Congress, the students will participate in a number of debates and lectures on the European Union and the Mediterranean, the Mediterranean identity and civilisation, and the promotion of peace in the region.

The programme also includes an excursion to Paphos, a sightseeing tour of Nicosia and a "Mediterranean night".

    [04] Israelis - Espionage - Trial

Larnaca, Jan 20 (CNA) -- Two Israeli Mossad agents accused of spying against the Cyprus Republic denied today the charges before Court while the prosecution submitted sophisticated equipment into evidence.

State prosecutors also asked for a reference to espionage against "military installations" in one of the charges against the two Israelis to be dropped.

As a result the first charge reads as follows: "The defendants in unknown time between 15 October and 11 November 1998 in Cyprus and Israel collaborated into spying against the Cyprus Republic i.e. they collaborated against the interests of the Republic to collect information which could be useful to any other state".

Udi Hargov, 37, and Igal Damari, 49, were arrested last November at the southern coastal village of Zygi after a police stakeout of their leased apartment, close to a sensitive military area.

Appearing before the Court today they pleaded not guilty to charges of spying, conspiracy to commit espionage and possession of banned listening equipment.

A total of 23 exhibits, including scanners, a laptop computer, mobile phones and tape recorders were presented as evidence by the prosecution which pointed out that through this equipment the defendants watched National Guard, Civil Aviation, Fire Brigade and other essential public services frequencies.

The trial was adjourned until Tuesday, January 26.
