    [02] Hannay - Departure

Nicosia, Jan 24 (CNA) -- Britain's envoy for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay, leaves later today for London after a brief visit to the island, primarily to attend a meeting of British ambassadors in Athens, Ankara and Nicosia to review regional developments.

Sir David is not expected to make any statements before his departure. During his four-day stay, Hannay did not meet either President Glafcos Clerides or the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

The President cancelled a planned working dinner with Hannay on Friday following the latter's comments on arrival.

The British diplomat said one should not expect any moves from Turkey in return for the President's decision not to deploy Russian anti-aircraft missiles S300 in Cyprus and implied that the President's moves to secure implementation of UN resolutions were tantamount to tactical manoeuvering.

Hannay also referred to the Swiss Confederation, hinting that this might be a good example for Cyprus to follow.

His comments caused a storm of protests from the island's political leadership, some of whom requested his removal from his post. The local press followed in the same steps and blasted Hannay for his statements.

The High Commission expressed regret over the entire incident and dismissed the President's objections to Hannay's statements, putting down to misinterpretation.
