1040:CYPPRESS:01[01] Loizidou - Woman of the Year award - SpeechNew York, Mar 15 (CNA) -- The decision of the European Court of Human Rights in favour of a Greek Cypriot woman, in her struggle against Turkey's violation of her right to property in the occupied areas is a "moral confirmation" of her human right to go home.Titina Loizidou made the statement on Saturday in New York where she was granted the 1999 Woman of the Year Award of the Pancyprian Association of America of the Women's Issues Network Organisation. Loizidou was vindicated by the European Court of Human Rights, when the Court ordered Turkey to pay her over 800.000 dollars for the loss of her property in the Turkish occupied town of Kyrenia in the northern part of Cyprus. Despite the ruling, Turkey has not yet paid the compensation to Loizidou. In her speech, Loizidou dedicated the award "to all the women of Cyprus". Referring to the court's ruling, Loizidou said "it is an important decision", not just for her but all those Cypriot women who since 1974 have not been able to go to their properties. Describing Kyrenia, Loizidou said it "is all those little experiences that formed" her early life that led her to the decision not to be deprived of her homeland. "It is for this reason that I feel that this decision by the European Court of Human Rights - although very important in its political and legal dimensions - it is a moral confirmation that nobody has the right to deprive a person of the enjoyment of being in the place he comes from - the place where generations and generations of his family were living", she said. "It is for this deprivation of my rights as a citizen of the Cyprus Republic that I decided to file the application against Turkey", she concluded. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 percent of the island's territory. CNA EC/MCH/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1340:CYPPRESS:02[02] Cyprus - Armenia - Health mattersNicosia, Mar 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Armenia are set to sign an interstate agreement in the fields of public health and medical science, Health Minister, Christos Solomis, announced here today.Cyprus handed six hemodialysis devices to the Armenian Church which will in turn hand them over to the Samatarian Medical Centre of Gyumri town in Armenia. Solomis described the decision as "a small gesture of Cyprus' friendship to the people of Armenia". Referring to the proposed agreement, Solomis said it will give the opportunity to both countries to strengthen their cooperation and promote research and the exchange of scientific staff. The director of the Kidney Department of the Nicosia General Hospital said Armenian doctors will be able to participate in a training programme on nephrology and transplants at the University Athens with their Cypriot colleagues. The Armenian representative to the Cyprus Parliament, Petros Kalaydjian, expressed gratitude for the donation and thanked the people of Cyprus for their support and solidarity. A spokesman of the Executive Council of the Armenian Church of Cyprus thanked the Cypriot government, noting the contribution is a sign of friendship.
