0855:CYPPRESS:01[01] Albright - Papandreou - CyprusWashington, May 27 (CNA) -- US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright has said the Cyprus problem will be discussed at a G8 meeting to take place next month in Cologne.Speaking to the press after a meeting with her Greek counterpart, George Papandreou, yesterday, Albright said "they discussed relations between Greece and Turkey and the question of Cyprus". She pointed out that "the US still remains committed to helping out two allies to bridge their differences and ensure stability throughout the Aegean". Asked whether the Cyprus issue would be discussed at the G8 meeting next June, Albright replied positively. "As far as Cyprus is concerned, yes, we do expect, it is a subject that is always one of discussion, we also expect it to be part of the G8." The main issue of discussion of the Albright - Papandreou talks was the crisis in Yugoslavia. Papandreou also discussed the Cyprus question in New York with US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus, Richard Holbrooke. Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal. CNA DA/MCH/GP/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY0940:CYPPRESS:02[02] Hotel employees - StrikeNicosia, May 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus' hotel employees were staging a six-hour strike this morning as an expression of solidarity with their colleagues working at Larnaca's "Golden Bay" and "Lordos Beach" hotels.Trade Unions PEO and SEK had announced they would stage a nationwide strike more than two weeks ago, while a third Trade Union, DEOK, called its members yesterday to join today's strike. Some four months ago strikes were called at the "Golden Bay" and "Lordos Beach" hotels, in protest against the dismissals of 53 employees. The staff was made redundant when outside contractors were invited to do their jobs, in a bid, according to the hotel owners, to overturn chronic losses at the two establishments. Today's strike will end midday. CNA MCH/GP/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1000:CYPPRESS:03[03] Rolandis - Libya - MaltaNicosia, May 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister, Nicos Rolandis, returned late last night from Libya, where he had meetings with a number of high ranking officials in a bid to further develop bilateral relations.During his five-day official visit to Libya, Rolandis met with Secretaries for the Economy and Trade, Abdul-Hafedh Al-Zletni, Tourism, Al Boukhari Salem Hodah, Agriculture, Ali Yousef Jumaa, Halth, Hatloush Faraj Hatioush and Energy, Abdallah Salem Al Bedri. Stressing the need for closer relations, Rolandis and the Libyan Secretary for Economy and Trade, discussed ways of boosting bilateral trade as well as the issue of joint ventures and construction of works in Libya by Cypriot companies. They agreed for the second meeting of the joint Intergovernmental Committee Cyprus - Libya, to take place at ministerial level next Autumn. Al-Zletni will visit Cyprus for this purpose, an official press release issued here said. During his meeting with the Libyan Tourism Secretary, Rolandis discussed the signing of a cooperation agreement in tourism, which will also be discussed at the Intergovernmental Committee meeting. Rolandis expressed to the Libyan Energy Secretary, Cyprus' interest for purchasing Libyan oil, while the desire for further cooperation in the fields of agriculture and health was discussed during his meeting with the respective Secretaries. On his way back to Cyprus, Rolandis stopped over in Malta where he met with Tourism Minister, Michael Refalo, the President of Air Malta and other officials. CNA GP/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1430:CYPPRESS:05[05] Cyprus - EU accession chaptersNicosia, May 27 (CNA) -- The Council of Ministers today approved Cyprus' positions in another four chapters of the European Union aquis communautaire, that will be submitted tomorrow or on Monday.The four chapters deal with the free movement of capital, economic and monetary union, social policy and energy. The Republic's chief negotiator in the accession talks with the EU, George Vassiliou, said he explained to the ministers Cyprus' positions as they were formulated after the four chapters were discussed in the Cyprus House of Representatives and in Brussels. He said that later today Cyprus' positions on the four chapters will be forwarded to the Republic's Mission to Brussels and will be handed in tomorrow or on Monday. Cyprus opened substantive accession talks with the EU in November last year.
