    [01] Spokesman - National Council

Nicosia, Jul 16 (CNA) -- The National Council, comprising the island's political leadership, reviewed today recent developments in efforts to settle the Cyprus problem and exchanged views on prospects for a settlement and future strategies.

"The Council continued the exchange of views on the latest developments, prospects and the strategy on the Cyprus question," Government Spokesman Costas Serezis said here today.

Speaking after the two-hour meeting, Serezis said the Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, will continue "to monitor developments and will meet again after the summer holidays."

Speaking on behalf of all seven participating parties, Serezis said he was not authorised to make any further comment about the content of the discussions.

None of the party leaders attending today's meeting made any statement to the press.

Replying to questions, Serezis said yesterday's speech by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash before the Turkish National Assembly that he would not participate in any negotiations unless his self-proclaimed state is recognised come as no surprise.

"Denktash's comments add nothing to the long standing positions Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership has held," the spokesman added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.
