[01] South Australia - Cyprus Friendship Group

Nicosia, Aug 7 (CNA) -- Members of the Parliament of South Australia have formed a Friendship Group for Cyprus with the aim to strengthen the bonds between the two states.

Presiding the group is Camel Zollo, deputy for the Australian Labour Party at the House of Assembly, and Vice president is deputy Steve Condous of Greek origin, member of the Liberal Party of Australia.

The group has sent a letter to Australian Prime Minister John Howard calling on the federal government to support the Cyprus problem and put it on the agenda as an urgent issue for debate at the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Durban, South Africa from November 12-15.

The group supports a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, based on the UN resolutions for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with a single sovereignty.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
