[01] Dame Ann - Resumption of duties

Nicosia, Aug 9 (CNA) -- UN resident representative Dame Ann Hercus, who resigned from her post last month but is staying on until September, returned to her office today but has no scheduled meetings this week.

Dame Ann resigned at the end of July for "family reasons", the UN had announced.

"She's back at the office and has resumed her activities," UN peacekeeping force spokeswoman Sarah Russel told CNA.

She added that Dame Ann, who returned to Cyprus on Friday, has "no meetings scheduled with either leader for this week."

President Glafcos Clerides, who returned from a Greek island cruise late on Saturday, will remain on vacation until next week.

Dame Ann had taken up her post as Deputy Special Representative to the Secretary-General on July 1st and began shuttle talks with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides in a bid to reduce tensions and get the stalled negotiating process started.

She resigned very soon after being appointed special representative. Negotiations for a settlement in Cyprus have not been held since the summer of 1997 because Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash refuses to negotiate unless the illegal regime established in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since 1974 is recognised.

He also demands the talks aim at establishing a "confederation of two states", contrary to UN resolutions stipulating for a bizonal, bicommunal federation.
