1030:CYPPRESS:01[01] Bone Marrow Bank - Overseas CypriotsNicosia, Aug 26 (CNA) -- Overseas Cypriots, meeting here at their annual conference, have decided to set up a world bone marrow donor bank to facilitate worldwide efforts to find donors for Cypriots who need a bone marrow transplant. The proposed bank is to cooperate with the Karaiskakeon Foundation, the Cyprus Bone Marrow Donor Bank, which is the largest Greek bone marrow donor bank with more than 6.500 volunteers. The whole effort will be coordinated by the Federation of Cypriot Organisations in Greece, which initiated the moves to set up the world donor bank. The Federation intends to organise a special function in November in Athens to make the public more aware of the need for a donor bank and explain that the genetic make up of Cypriots and Greeks around the world can help efforts to find donors. The proposal also aims to give a boost to the funds of the Karaiskakeon Foundation, a charity, to allow it to continue its charitable work.
