    [01] "Maritime Cyprus '99" - Conference - Shipping

    Nicosia, Sep 21 (CNA) -- "Maritime Cyprus '99", a major Conference on shipping, will take place in Cyprus between October 3 - 6 with more than one thousand participants from around 35 countries.

    Speaking today at a press conference, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Works, Vassos Pyrgos, said Cyprus ranks sixth on the list of maritime countries, with 2.667 ships and 26,5 million gross tons.

    [02] President Clerides - Slovak Premier

    Nicosia, Sep 21 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Slovak Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda met yesterday in New York and pledged for closer relations between the two countries.

    Speaking after the meeting the Slovak Premier described the meeting as "very good and constructive" and said he invited President Clerides to visit his country.

    [03] British Bases - New Chief Officer

    Nicosia, Sep 21 (CNA) -- David Bonner has taken over the post of Chief Officer for the British Bases in Cyprus, it was announced here today.

    Bonner, from Great Yarmouth, joined the Defence Ministry as a trainee in 1974. His last appointment was to the Balkans Secretariat to assist with the management of the Kosovo conflict, according to a British Bases press release.

    [04] AHI President - Cyprus question - US President

    Nicosia, Sep 21 (CNA) -- A prominent Greek American has called on US President Bill Clinton to stress to Ankara that it must make moves towards a settlement of the Cyprus problem at his meeting with Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit next week.

    In a letter to Clinton, President of the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) Eugene Rossides expresses the hope that the American President will emphasise to Ecevit that "the US will draw adverse conclusions from any continued refusal by Turkey to negotiate constructively."

    [05] Clerides - Kasoulides - American Jewish Committee

    New York, Sep 21 (CNA) -- The American Jewish Committee said the US could play a role in finding a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem and expressed its satisfaction with the appointment of Alfred Moses, who served as its president for several years, to the post of US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus.

    A Committee delegation, headed by its Executive Director David Harris today had separate meetings here with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, with whom they discussed both the Cyprus and Arab-Israeli peace process.

    Talking to the press after the meetings, Harris described it as "good and friendly" and said "relations between the Jewish community and Cyprus have been very good and they have developed a good friendship over the years".

    [06] Foreign Minister - British envoy

    New York, Sep 21 (CNA) -- The procedure of prospective talks is of secondary importance provided that negotiations are underway with a view to finding a solution to the Cyprus problem, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said here today, after a meeting with Britain's Cyprus envoy Sir David Hannay.

    "This opportunity should not be lost and we hope it will not be lost, the time is ripe," Kasoulides said, pointing out that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council want their decision to embark on talks implemented.

    EU - Cyprus question by Emilia Christofi

    New York, Sep 21 (CNA) -- Finland's Foreign Minister Tarja Halonen has called on the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus "to accept the invitations to negotiations under the auspices of the UN Secretary General."

    Referring to the Cyprus question in her address today at the UN General Assembly on behalf of the European Union (EU), Halonen said the Union "continues to fully support the efforts of the S.G. of the UN towards a negotiated political settlement of the Cyprus question."
