    [02] Greek FM - UN - Cyprus

Nicosia, Sep 23 (CNA) -- Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou has called on the Turkish Cypriots to "grab this historical opportunity" and break down the last Berlin Wall dividing the Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

He also expressed hope that a new initiative on Cyprus could help break the deadlock and pointed out that the accession of Cyprus to the European Union will certainly benefit the two communities.

[03] President Clerides - UN General Assembly

    by Emilia Christofi

New York, Sep 23 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides told the UN General Assembly today that Cyprus is waiting for the UN Secretary-General to invite the two sides for talks, in the most ambitious initiative ever undertaken to find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

He said the parametres for the solution of the Cyprus problem are already included in UN Security Council resolutions, noting that what is required is the political will of the sides.

Addressing the 54th General Assembly session, Clerides said the Greek Cypriot side is ready to negotiate in good faith and joined his voice to that of the Security Council, the European Union and the Group of seven most industrialised countries plus Russia (G8) in asking Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to come to the negotiating table without preconditions.

Clerides repeated his invitation to the Turkish Cypriot side to join Cyprus' EU course which he described as the greatest achievement since the establishment of the Cyprus Republic.

"This year marks a quarter of a century since the Turkish invasion and unlawful occupation of 37 per cent of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus," Clerides said.

Stressing that although he could "point an accusing finger against Turkey and talk at length about the ethnic cleansing practised against the Greek Cypriot side, which resulted to 180 thousand Greek Cypriots to become refugees in their own country" and the drama of the relatives of some 1600 Greek Cypriots missing since the Turkish invasion, Clerides said he will "abstain from doing so. I prefer to look to the future and not to the past," he said.

The President said Cyprus is waiting for the UN Secretary-General "to issue the invitations to both sides to take part in negotiations under the auspices of the UN, in the most ambitious initiative ever undertaken, to find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem."

He said this initiative enjoys the active support of the international community and particularly the G8, the Security Council, the EU and the Non Aligned Movement.

[04] President Clerides - UN role

    by Emilia Christofi

New York, Sep 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides today reaffirmed his government's strong commitment to the UN and its support for the ongoing efforts for its reform "so that it will be able to successfully meet the considerable challenges that lie ahead."

Addressing the General Assembly 54th session, Clerides said at times the challenges faced, such as violent conflicts, poverty and the fight against terrorism, may seem insurmountable but the Organisation's efforts must not be underestimated.

[05] Council of Europe - Cyprus

Nicosia, Sep 23 (CNA) -- Turkey's credibility to respect its obligations to Europe would be called into question, if it continues to disregard a European Court ruling on a human rights case involving Cyprus, the chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe Halldor Asgrimsson has said.

He also reiterated the position of the Council's Parliamentary Assembly that it does not recognise the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in Turkish occupied Cyprus.

[06] Clerides - Cyprus problem - Press conference

    by Emilia Christofi

New York, Sep 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides told a press conference here today immediately after addressing the UN General Assembly that there is still time to solve the Cyprus problem if there is the political will from both sides.

"I have three more years to serve as President, and I believe that in three years, even before that, if there is the political will from both sides, it is long enough time to find a solution to any problem, including the Cyprus problem," said President Clerides, when asked if he believes that in his presidency the Cyprus problem would be solved.
