    [01] Prescott - Cyprus problem

    London, Sep 27 (CNA) -- British Labour Party deputy leader and Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has said his party's policy on Cyprus is guided by the principle of justice and it aims at the unity of the island.

    Speaking at a meeting last night, held at the fringe of the Labour party conference which opened today in Bournemouth, Prescott also stressed the importance of the international initiative underway aiming at a Cyprus settlement.

    [02] National Guard - Manoeuvres

    Nicosia, Sep 27 (CNA) -- "Nikiforos", the annual largest military exercise of the National Guard will take place between October 2-7 with the participation of Greek warplanes and navy vessels.

    Speaking today at a press conference on "Nikiforos", Chief of Staff of the National Guard, Brigadier General Alexandros Pallas said the purpose of the manoeuvres is to assess the competence of the armed forces, mainly the reserves, in all conditions of combat.

    New York, Sep 27 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides stressed that the example of Cyprus testifies to the inherent dangers confronting small countries in a world dominated by military strength.

    President Clerides was addressing today the 22nd special session of the UN General Assembly on the review and appraisal of the implementation of the programme of action for the sustainable development of small island developing states.

    New York, Sep 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus urged here Monday small island states to create the necessary climate that will help them face their challenges, whether they be security concerns, economic issues or environmental priorities.

    Addressing the 22nd special session of the UN General Assembly on the review and appraisal of the implementation of the programme of action for the sustainable development of small island developing states", Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said "the international community has a responsibility to assist its small members in meeting their needs...".

    [05] Meeting - Special units to tackle natural disasters

    Nicosia, Sep 27 Ä The establishment of special units to tackle the consequences of major natural disasters, such as earthquakes, was discussed at a top level meeting today, which decided that in the meantime the Fire Service will set up a temporary team.

    Justice and Public Order Minister Nicos Koshis will soon visit Athens to exchange views on the issue with his Greek counterpart and ask for members of the Greek special forces to visit Cyprus to train people, it was announced.
