New York, Sep 29 (CNA) -- "The Greek Cypriot side remains firm in its position for unconditional talks on Cyprus to take place this fall, according to the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the statement on Cyprus of the G8."

This was stated here yesterday by Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou, commenting on the results of the meeting yesterday between US President Bill Clinton and Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit.

[02] Cyprus Spokesman - Clerides' New York trip

    by Emilia Christofi

New York, Sep 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou described as "very significant" the meetings which President Glafcos Clerides and the Cypriot delegation held in New York in the last 10 days, stressing that the US and those countries which are promoting a Cyprus settlement have the power to lift the Turkish intransigence.

President Clerides, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Papapetrou departed last night from New York after more than a week-long series of meetings which culminated with President Clerides' speech to the General Assembly and his meetings with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

    [03] Clinton - Ecevit - Cyprus

Washington, Sep 29 (CNA) -- The US continues to believe that peace talks on Cyprus should take place as soon as possible under UN auspices, with no preconditions and it intends to send its Presidential Envoy to Cyprus, Greece and Turkey to try and break the current deadlock.

The US considers this time "a very opportune moment" to push for direct negotiations and reiterates its strong backing for the G8 call, providing negotiations until "a settlement is reached." The US position was outlined after Tuesday's meeting between President Bill Clinton and Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit, during which Clinton expressed his strong support for Turkey's candidacy for European Union membership.
