    [02] US - Turkey - Cyprus question

Washington, Sep 30 (CNA) -- US State Department spokesman James Foley has said the US is trying to get the two sides in Cyprus to begin unconditional negotiations aiming at establishing a bizonal, bicommunal federation on the island.

However, hopes to get negotiations underway soon have been dampened as in all his public statements in the US visiting Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit insists on the precondition that the talks aim at setting up a confederation of two states, contrary to UN resolutions.

Nicosia, Sep 30 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has protested to international organisations the illegal excavations carried out in the ancient Kingdom of Salamis, in the Turkish-occupied areas of the island, by archaeologists of the University of Ankara.

Cyprus' permanent representative to UNESCO Constantinos Leventis revealed here last night during the presentation of a book on this ancient- city kingdom that the illegal excavations began a year ago and that all foreign universities approached by the Turks refused to be part of this unlawful act.
