    [01] President Clerides - Greek Defence Ministry officials

    Nicosia, Oct 6 (CNA) -- Greece's Deputy Defence Minister Dimitris Apostolakis today appeared completely satisfied with the way the Cyprus National Guard annual military exercise code-named "Nikiforos" is developing, noting it is being carried out according to plans.

    Apostolakis, accompanied by Greek Chief of Staff Manousos Paragioudakis, called on President Glafcos Clerides early today before going to a Larnaca area to watch the final phase of the National Guard exercise that got underway on Saturday.

    [02] Road accident - Names

    Nicosia, Oct 6 (CNA) -- The rented car in which four British tourists lost their lives yesterday seems to have veered into the wrong lane hitting onto two cars coming in the opposite direction.

    British Bases police in Cyprus are continuing investigations into a road accident that killed Michael Salisbury and Margaret Gladys Salisbury, both 55, and John Stanley and Bertha Ann Tucker, both 66.

    [03] Military exercise - Greek airforce

    Nicosia, Oct 6 (CNA) -- Four Greek airforce planes, two A-7 Consair bombers and two F16 jets, as well as Greek parachutists participated in today's final phase of the Cyprus National Guard annual exercise code-named "Nikiforos '99", with the use of live ammunition.

    President Glafcos Clerides watched the manoeuvres at Kalo Chorio in Larnaca district together with Cyprus defence Minister Sokrates Hassikos, other ministers, Greece's Deputy Defence Minister Dimitris Apostolakis, Greece's Chief of Staff General Manousos Paragioudakis, Cyprus National Guard Commander Lieutenant-General Dimitris Dimou as well as political party leaders, deputies and other officials.

    [04] Cyprus - Brazil

    Nicosia, Oct 6 (CNA) -- Brazil has displayed keen interest in Cyprus, its economic development and the country's accession course for European Union membership.

    Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso invited the Republic's Ambassador to Brazil Erato Kozakou-Markoulli to inform him about the latest developments in the Cyprus question, the country's economic growth and its negotiations with the EU with a view to become a full member.

    Cardoso and Markoulli had a meeting in Brasilia after Markoulli, who is based in Washington, presented her credentials to the Brazilian President.

    Markoulli conveyed President Glafcos Clerides' greetings to Cardoso and thanked him for the steady support his government has shown for Cyprus.

    She also assured him she would work to further enhance the traditionally friendly ties between Cyprus and Brazil.

    Cyprus has no embassy in Brazil but covers Latin American countries from its other embassies in the US and elsewhere. Brazil maintains no embassy in Cyprus but its Ambassador in Tel Aviv is also accredited to the Republic of Cyprus.
