    [01] Italian Parliament President - Visit

    Nicosia, Oct 24 (CNA) -- President of the Italian Parliament Luciano Violante is coming to Cyprus today for an official brief visit at the invitation of his counterpart Spyros Kyprianou.

    Violante, who is heading a delegation, will call on President Glafcos Clerides and meet Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, his Cypriot counterpart, and chief negotiator in Cyprus' accession talks with the European Union George Vassiliou, tomorrow.

    [02] World Council of Churches - Cyprus question - Interview

    Nicosia, Oct 24 (CNA) -- The need for a strengthened civil society and more contacts between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots was one of the conclusions reached by a three-member World Council of Churches (WCC) delegation after meetings with both parties on the island last week.

    Speaking to CNA, on behalf of the delegation, Executive Secretary of the Commission of the Churches on International Affairs responsible for the Cyprus portfolio, Salpy Eskidjian, said a settlement does not only lie in the hands of foreign envoys but also in the hands of the people on this island.

    [03] Council of Europe committee - Meeting

    Nicosia, Oct 24 (CNA) -- President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Committee on Economic Affairs and Development Helle Degn is expected here today for a Committee meeting opening Monday in the southern coastal town of Limassol.

    A seminar on "Economic Reconstruction and Renewal in South-eastern Europe following the Kosovo conflict" will also be held during the Committee meeting.

    [04] UNFICYP open house

    Nicosia, Oct 24 (CNA) -- UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Acting Chief of Mission James Holger today said that the wish for peace is "especially strong for those of us who work in peace-keeping missions like UNFICYP."

    Addressing Greek and Turkish Cypriots attending the last UNFICYP open day of this millennium, Holger said "it is our job to keep and help to foster peace on this island, so that the children of Cyprus can grow up in a safe and peaceful environment."

    [05] ADIK - First congress

    Nicosia, Oct 24 (CNA) -- The Democratic Struggle Movement (ADIK) held its first congress in Nicosia today, in the presence of President Glafcos Clerides and party leaders or representatives, amid calls for unity between all political forces and the safeguarding of democracy.

    Dinos Michaelides, a former Interior Minister who had backed President Clerides' re-election last year, was unanimously elected ADIK president pledging to work hard so that the Movement has a say in public issues and manages to enter Parliament.
