    [01] President - Commonwealth summit

    Nicosia, Nov 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides is scheduled to participate in the final working session of a meeting of Commonwealth leaders, as they prepare to round up their four-day deliberations in Durban, South Africa.

    The summit, CHOGM, is expected to adopt a communique on Cyprus, something heads of state and governments have done in previous meetings.

    [02] Cyprus talks - UN - Statement

    Nicosia, Nov 15 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has clarified that proximity talks between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides will take place in New York beginning of December.

    "There seems to be some confusion about the statement I made yesterday (Saturday) on Cyprus," Kofi Annan said in a clarifying statement, issued late last night in New York.

    [03] Commonwealth - Draft Communique - Cyprus

    Durban, Nov 15 (CNA) -- Commonwealth heads of government have strongly endorsed UN efforts to resume comprehensive negotiations on Cyprus without preconditions and with a view to reach a settlement, according to a draft extract in their final communique, expected to be adopted later today.

    They also expressed their appreciation of the willingness of the government of the Republic of Cyprus to respond positively to an invitation to negotiations on the basis of UN Security Council resolution 1250 and said the Turkish Cypriot demand for recognition of a separate state in the occupied part of Cyprus is unacceptable.

    [04] Justice Minister - Russia

    Nicosia, Nov 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Nicos Koshis left for Russia today on an official visit at the invitation of Russian Interior Minister, Vladimir Borisovitch Rushailo.

    During his three-day visit Koshis will hold talks with Russian officials aimed at signing a cooperation agreement between the ministries of justice of both countries.

    [05] Acting President - Israeli ambassador

    Nicosia, Nov 15 (CNA) -- Israeli ambassador to Cyprus Shemi Tzur today expressed hope that proximity talks between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash due to start on December 3, in New York, would succeed.

    Speaking to CNA, after a meeting with Acting President of the Republic Spyros Kyprianou, Tzur wished for successful negotiations. "It's about time that we see progress in finding a solution to the Cyprus problem", he said.

    [06] Defence Minister - Greece

    Larnaca, Nov 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos left for Greece today where he will have talks with his Greek counterpart Akis Tsohazopoulos, with whom he has "a lot to discuss."

    Hasikos reiterated that as long as the Turkish side continues to be intransigent towards efforts to reach a negotiated settlement in Cyprus, the Republic has a duty to boost its defence capability.

    [07] Cyprus - US - Combatting money laundering - Seminar

    Nicosia, Nov 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus Attorney General Alecos Markides today said money laundering is a real threat to the integrity, reliability and stability of financial and trade systems, that can only be tackled through international cooperation.

    Addressing a seminar on money laundering organised here by Cypriot and US authorities, Markides said the Republic has adopted practical legislative and other measures to combat money laundering which have been welcomed by international organisations and agencies dealing with the issue.

    [08] President Clerides - Commonwealth Communique - Reaction

    Durban, Nov 15 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has welcomed the Cyprus extract in the final communique adopted here today by Commonwealth leaders, describing it as "very strong."

    The President also said this communique as well as other resolutions on Cyprus should be put into good use in the forthcoming UN-led proximity talks, due to begin in New York in early December.
