[04] President Clerides - UN Secretary General

New York, Dec 9 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides' meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in context of proximity talks on the Cyprus problem, was today shorter than usual lasting only half an hour.

According to the original agenda, the meeting was to take place at 16:30 Cyprus time, and would be followed by a meeting between Annan and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash at 18.30.

The new timetable placed President Clerides' meeting with the UN chief at 17:00 Cyprus time, followed by Denktash's meeting at 17:45.

[05] Greek Prime Minister - EU Summit

Helsinki, Dec 9 (CNA) -- Greek Premier Costas Simitis has described negotiations with European Union partners on his country's positions regarding the Cyprus question, a road map for Turkey and the settlement of any Greco-Turkish differences in the international court at The Hage as "extremely difficult", noting that a Greek "yes or no" to Ankara's candidacy during the two-day summit beginning tomorrow is still at 50 - 50.

Simitis, who arrived here earlier today has met the Finnish EU presidency whom he will meet again later and underlined that Athens "will insist on achieving the best possible in the country's interests".

[06] Denktash - Statements

New York, Dec 9 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash met today with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in the context of proximity talks on the Cyprus problem, aimed at promoting progress towards direct talks.

Speaking after the meeting, Denktash claimed he never said he would leave the talks if Turkey was not upgraded to a candidate country for accession to the European Union, at the Helsinki Summit, but refused to say whether he would stay either.

[07] Finnish EU Presidency - Cyprus Turkey

Helsinki, 9 Dec -- The Finnish European Union (EU) presidency has said that the European Council opening tomorrow will try to find language and solutions supportive to the need of reaching a political settlement in Cyprus, in a reference expected to be included in the conclusions.

At a press conference today ahead of the EU summit opening Friday, Alec Aalto, State Secretary for EU affairs at the Finnish Prime Minister's office, also said that if Turkey manages to secure a candidate status it will have the same rights and obligations as other candidate countries.

Referring to the enlargement process in view of the fact that another six countries are expected to open accession talks, he said that speed of negotiations of each applicant coutnry will be dictated by its ability to adopt, accept and put into effect the aquis communautaire.

[08] UN Spokesman - Annan - Clerides - Denktash - Meetings

New York, Dec 9 (CNA) -- The UN Secretary General had brief separate meetings here today with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash before their respective delegations joined today's sessions, UN Chief's Spokesman Fred Eckhard said here today.

The Spokesman said Kofi Annan wanted to meet with the parties "to catch up and see that things were still on track" but refrained from commenting on any link between yesterday's statement by the UN Secretary General on confidentiality.
