[01] Egyptian Ambassador - Cyprus - Interview

Nicosia, Dec 15 (CNA) -- After the Helsinki European Council
conclusions over Cyprus and Turkey, the people have now a new chance that
they must catch it, said Egypt's Ambassador to Cyprus Omar Metwally, in an
interview with CNA.
He stated that his country wanted to see Cyprus reunited, according to
the UN resolutions, expressing the hope that the UN-led proximity talks on
Cyprus, whose first round ended yesterday in New York, would lead to a just,
viable and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem.

[02] Denktash - Ecevit - Statements
Nicosia, Dec 15 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said today
proximity talks in New York on the Cyprus problem were "beneficial",
because, "truths were put on the table" and the Turkish side had the chance
to explain to foreign diplomats its demand for confederation.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Turkish Prime Minister
Bulent Ecevit, after an hour-long meeting in Constantinople (Istanbul)
Denktash also expressed the hope that with Turkey a candidate for European
Union accession, Ankara will be in a better position to assist the
accession of a "confederal Cyprus to the Union".

[03] UNFICYP Commander - Farewell ceremony
Nicosia, Dec 15 (CNA) -- A farewell ceremony was held in Nicosia today in
honour of the Commander of the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP)
Major-General Evergisto Arturo de Vergara who relinquished his post today.
De Vergara of Argentina held the post of UNFICYP Commander since
February 1997 and his successor will be Major-General Victory Rana of Nepal
who is expected to arrive in Cyprus next week.
