[01] Clinton - Bimonthly report on Cyprus
Washington, Jan 4 (CNA) -- US President Bill Clinton refers to the
announcement of the start of the UN-led proximity talks on Cyprus in his
bimonthly report to Congress on progress towards a negotiated settlement of
the Cyprus problem.
In a letter to the Speaker of the House and the Chairman of the Senate
Committee on Foreign Relations, submitting his report covering the period
October 1 to November 30, 1999, Clinton notes that UN Secretary-General
Kofi Annan announced on November 13 the start of proximity talks in New
York on December 3 to work towards a resolution of the "long-standing
Cyprus dispute".

Nicosia, Jan 4 (CNA) -- Lazaros Lazarou assumed today the position of the
Cyprus Republic's Accountant General.
A speacil ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace, during which
President Glafcos Clerides congratulated him and wished him success in his
duties.

[03] Archbishop Chrystostomos - Orthodoxy celebrations - Israel
Nicosia, Jan 4 (CNA) -- The Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus,
Archbishop Chrysostomos, flew to Israel last night to attend celebrations
for the 2000 years since the birth of Christ, at the invitation of the
Jerusalem Patriarch Diodoros.
The director of his office Frixos Kleanthous told CNA today that
during his stay in Israel the Archbishop will take part in meetings
discussing issues relating to Orthodoxy.

[04] President Clerides - Japanese Ambassador
Nicosia, Jan 4 (CNA) -- Japan's Ambassador to Cyprus Kazuo Matsumoto said
here today that his country, which is taking chairmanship of the group of
the most developed countries (G8) this year, "is ready to provide all the
possible support towards a settlement of the Cyprus issue".
Speaking after a farewell meeting he had with Cyprus President Glafcos
Clerides, Matsumoto underlined that Japan supports the endeavours of the
United Nations towards a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue.

[05] Cyprus - Protection of Russian interests
Nicosia, Jan 4 (CNA) -- The government has increased security measures at
the Russian embassy and other Russian interests in Cyprus following
information concerning possible attacks on Russian interests in Europe and
the Middle East.
Justice and Public Order Minister Nicos Koshis told CNA today that the
measures have been stepped up after "supplementary information".
