    [01] Cyprus - Mauritius - Agreement

    Nicosia, Jan 21 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Mauritius signed an agreement here Friday for the avoidance of double taxation.

    The agreement was signed by the Ministers of Finance of Cyprus and Mauritius, Takis Klerides and Vasan Kumar Bunwaree.

    [03] Cyprus - "EXPO 2000"

    Nicosia, Jan 21 CNA) -- Cyprus' participation in the world fair "EXPO 2000" to take place in Hannover, Germany has been approved by the Cabinet.

    The Cabinet yesterday approved a previous decision for the participation taken by a ministerial committee.

    [04] Agriculture Minister - US Ambassador - Water problem

    Nicosia, Jan 21 (CNA) -- Water experts from the USA will visit Cyprus to work with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot experts from both communities in an effort to solve the long-standing problem of water shortage Minister of Agriculture, Natural Sources and Environment Costas Themistocleous and US Ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler announced today.

    Pointing out that the water shortage problem is faced equally by both communities Themistocleous expressed the government's readiness to contribute in promoting bicommunal works to deal with the issue.

    [05] Cyprus - Papandreou - Cem

    Nicosia, Jan 21 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government sees no change in the Turkish policy on Cyprus but believes that improved Greco-Turkish relations could help bring about such a change, its Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    Retaining an atmosphere of tension would be wrong, he said and pointed out that a new momentum created as a result of improved Greco-Turkish relations and the spirit of the Helsinki European Union Summit have boosted international initiatives aiming at a Cyprus settlement.

    [06] Commerce Minister - Fuel prices

    Nicosia, Jan 21 (CNA) -- Cyprus Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis today said the Cabinet will decide mid February whether fuel prices will go up in order to help oil companies to deal with their financial losses.

    Rolandis was speaking to the press after a meeting with representatives of oil companies operating in Cyprus.

    [07] Defence Minister - Return from Athens

    Larnaca, Jan 21 (CNA) -- Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos today returned to Cyprus from Greece where he held talks with his Greek counterpart Akis Tsohatzopoulos.

    On his return to the island Hasikos said that earlier he visited the island of Crete where he met with operators of the S300 anti-aircraft missile system based on the island.

    [08] Tourism Minister - Russian Ambassador

    Nicosia, Jan 21 (CNA) -- Russia is the fourth tourist market for Cyprus and is one of the island's most important partners in the field of high technology, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis said here today.

    Speaking after a meeting with outgoing Russian Ambassador in Nicosia Georgi Mouradov, Rolandis said Russia, the US and Israel assist Cyprus in the field of high technology.

    [09] Cyprus - Greco-Turkish relations

    Constantinople, Jan 21 (CNA) -- The new momentum in Greco-Turkish relations will not be retained if the Cyprus problem is not settled and Greco-Turkish relations are not resolved, diplomatic sources believe.

    The Cyprus problem was raised in all meetings Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou had during his official visit in Turkey and according to the same sources he stressed the need for greater contact between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot non-governmental organisations.

    [10] Greek Foreign Minister - Patriarch

    Constantinople, Jan 21 (CNA) -- Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos expressed today the hope that Turkey's nomination as a candidate country for accession to the European Union would lead to closer relations with Greece.

    On his part Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou praised the contribution of the Patriarchate towards reconciliation of the peoples of Greece and Turkey and for peace in the region.
