    [01] Cyprus MPs - PACE committees

    Strasbourg, Jan 25 (CNA) -- Two members of Cyprus' House of Representatives were last night elected as vice-presidents of two of the committees of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe of Europe (PACE).

    They are Takis Hadjidemetriou, who was elected first vice-president of the Committee of Agriculture and Rural Development as a representative of the socialist group and Doros Christodoulides, who was elected third vice- president of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and demography as a representative of the left-wing group.

    Overall 14 committees are working in the framework of the PACE. Each one has one president and three vice-presidents.

    Cyprus' credentials were approved yesterday without objection.

    [02] National council - Cyprus question - Meeting

    Nicosia, Jan 25 (CNA) -- Political party leaders today discussed the substance of the Cyprus problem with President Glafcos Clerides in view of the second round of proximity talks, aimed at paving the way for a settlement on the island, scheduled to begin in Geneva later this month.

    "Following this meeting, the President feels he is going to these talks more reinforced to represent the Greek-Cypriot side," Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou told reporters after a National Council meeting, adding the party leaders know the positions the President will put forward at the proximity talks.     [04] Prodi - EU Enlargement

    Strasbourg, Jan 25 -- President of the European Commission Romano Prodi said here today the European Union will start accession negotiations with Turkey under the same conditions as with all other applicant countries, pointing out that the Copenhage n criteria should be respected by all.

    Replying to questions by members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Prodi described the progress made by countries candidate for EU accession, especially in the fields of civil and democratic rights and treatment of minorities, as "enormous". CNA/MK/MCH/2000

    [05] Economist Conference - Cyprus - EU

    Nicosia, Jan 25 (CNA) -- Economist's second Conference in Cyprus entitled "Heading Towards European Union (EU)" starts on January 27 in Nicosia.

    Both its organisers - the Economist Conferences - and its sponsors and supporters describe the Conference as very useful and well-timed as Cyprus is stepping up its harmonisation process in view of its substantive accession negotiations with the EU which started in November 1998.

    [06] EU team - Visit

    Nicosia, Jan 25 (CNA) --Head of the European Union team negotiating Cyprus' accession Leopold Maurer arrived here today heading a 12-member delegation that will discuss the chapters to be negotiated on under the Portuguese Presidency.

    Efforts for a meeting between the EU officials and Turkish Cypriots have failed as their leader Rauf Denktash has not moved from his intransigent position on the issue, informed sources told CNA. CNA/MA/GP/2000

    [07] Greek Defence Minister - Private visit

    Nicosia, Jan 25 --Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos will pay a private visit to Cyprus between January 27 and 28, but during his stay he will call on President Glafcos Clerides and the Primate of the Church of Cyprus Archbishop Chrystosto mos.

    According to a Defence Ministry press release, Tsohatzopoulos will meet his Cypriot counterpart Socrates Hasikos, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and party leaders. The Greek official will be the guest of honour and speaker at an Economist magazine conference entitled "Heading towards the European Union", opening on Thursday in Nicosia. CNA/MA/GP/2000

    [08] Cypriot MP - Parliamentary Assembly sub-committee presidency

    Strasbourg, Jan 25 (CNA) - Cypriot socialist EDEK party MP Takis Hadjidemetriou was unanimously elected today President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly sub-committee on the Protection of Cultural Heritage.

    The election took place during the Assembly session that got underway in Strasbourg, France yesterday.

    [09] CoE - Cyprus - Turkey

    Strasbourg, Jan 25 (CNA) -- Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of Council of Europe, Irish Foreign Minister David Andrews, expressed here today the belief that an urgent dialogue between the chairperson of the Committee of Ministers, who will succeed him (as he has resigned from the position of Ireland's FM) and the Turkish Foreign Minister may by helpful in the case of Titina Loizidou, a Greek - Cypriot refugee.

    The European Court of Human Rights ordered Turkey to allow access and use of Titina Loizidou's property in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkish troops since 1974 and pay the amount of 800,000 US dollars in compensation. CNA/MK/GP/2000
