    [01] "Economist" Conference - Cyprus - EU

    Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) - A two-day Conference entitled "Heading Towards European Union (EU)" organised by "The Economist Conferences" opened here today.

    The Conference is supported by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KEVE) the island's largest employers' union and Cyprus' biggest- selling newspaper "Phileleftheros".

    [02] Cyprus - Mexico - New ambassador

    Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) - President of Mexico, Ernesto Zedillo, has expressed his country's support to the Cyprus cause.

    Accepting the credentials of Cyprus' new ambassador to the country, Antonis Toumazis, Zedillo expressed the hope that relations between the two countries will further strengthen, an official statement said here Thursday.

    [04] Greek Defence Minister - Arrival

    Larnaca, Jan 27 (CNA) - Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos has ruled out a confederal solution in Cyprus and the remote possibility of giving some kind of recognition to the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus. The Minister also said the closer Turkey gets to Europe the better Greco-Turkish relations will be, reiterating Greek guarantees for Cyprus' security.

    Tsohatzopoulos, on a private visit here to address a two-day conference, welcomed the European Union summit conclusions on Cyprus saying they pave the way for developments in the Cyprus question.

    [05] University - Post-graduate courses

    Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) - The University of Cyprus will offer 21 post- graduate courses for a master's degree and a doctorate at the start of the next academic year, in September, the Dean of the University Nicolas Papamichael told a press conference here today. He said this is the first time post graduate courses are on offer from all 13 departments.

    "Our objective is to develop a balanced post-graduate course so that the programmes on offer will meet the demands of Cypriot reality. The demand for post-graduate course is very high and we believe this will rise, " he said. CNA/MM/MA/2000


    [06] Russian Ambassador - Book

    Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) - Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Georgi Mouradov presented here today his book "Russia - Cyprus, our common way", describing its publication as "a small but important event".

    The 200-page book, in Greek and English, deals with Moscow's views on Cyprus, developments in the Balkans and other issues of common interest. CNA/MM/MA/2000
