[01] President Clerides - Peace talks - Departure for Geneva

Larnaca, Jan 29 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides said today that UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem beginning in Geneva on Monday aim at an in-depth discussion on the four core issues, that is the distribution of powers, terri torial aspects, security and property.

Speaking on his departure from Larnaca Airport for Geneva, President Clerides also noted that the talks would not be turned into a discussion on confidence building measures, because this issue could be discussed in Cyprus, but added that such measu res could be discussed, as long as they do not imply recognition of the illegal regime in the Turkish occupied northern third of the island.

    [03] Turkish environmentalist - Cyprus

Nicosia, Jan 29 (CNA) - An environmentalist from the Green Group of Turkey today expressed his solidarity to the wives and other relatives of Greek Cypriots missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of 37 per cent of Cyprus' territory d uring a visit to the Ledra Palace checkpoint in Nicosia along with ecologists from Greece, here for the 3rd Congress of the Cyprus Ecologists and Environmentalists Movement taking place on Sunday.

Ender Eren said the protest held every weekend by the Greek Cypriot mothers reminds him of the 'Saturday Mothers' who for two years had staged a similar event every Saturday in a central square in Constantinople (Istanbul). He told them that for the past year the "Saturday Mothers" have been forbidden by the Turkish authorities to hold their event demanding the return of their loved ones who have "disappeared" while under arrest or in police custody.
