    Geneva, Jan 31 (CNA) - UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan today said he hopes a settlement to the Cyprus question will be reached by the end of this year, following a third round of peace talks to take place in early summer.

    Replying to questions after his first separate meetings with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in Geneva, the UN chief said all issues are on the table and he cannot prejudge the outcome of the proximity talks.

    Geneva, Jan 31(CNA) - Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash repeated his intransigent positions on the Cyprus problem here Monday, calling for the recognition of two so called "states" on the island, contrary to UN resolutions, claiming that this is "the only reality".

    Speaking after a meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the first in the second round of UN proximity talks on Cyprus, Denktash also said that more than four core issues are being examined and that he has not offered any new ideas on a Cyprus settlement.

    [03] Commerce Minister - Southern Australian Premier

    Nicosia, Jan 31 - Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister, Nicos Rolandis and Southern Australian Premier John Olsen discussed today the promotion of Cyprus as a centre for re-exporting Australian products.

    The Australian official also reaffirmed his country's support to the re-unification of the island and expressed the hope the second round of the UN-led proximity talks which began today in Geneva to come to a peaceful resolution of the Cyprus problem.

    [04] Communication Minister - Road Accident

    Nicosia, Jan 31 (CNA) - Communications and Works Minister, Averof Neophytou, said today that the state cannot take the full blame for yesterday's fatal accident on a steep curve on the Platres-Moniatis road, as the human factor should also be taken in to account, describing however the specific road as a "guillotine".

    Speaking after inspecting the scene of the accident, Neophytou said that the minibus, which was carrying 36 passengers, six of which died, was overloaded by 14 persons, while an Electromechanical Service officer said the driver must have been speedi ng, to lose control of the vehicle.

    [05] UN Chief - Cyprus talks

    Geneva, Jan 31(CNA) - UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan expressed the hope that during the second round of UN-led proximity talks, which began in Geneva today, the parties would continue building on the foundation for a comprehensive settlement, towar ds the end of this year.

    Annan also stressed that the only way to reach a settlement is through a continuous hard discussion with the spirit of give and take and a will to compromise. He said more than four core issues are being discussed at the talks, some of which have been raised by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash Annan told journalists "we are building on the foundations of the last proximity talks which were adjourned in New York in December".     [06] Irish Parliamentarians - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jan 31 (CNA) - A delegation of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Sport and Recreation of the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament) arrives on the island here Monday for a four day visit.

    The delegation chaired by Michael Ferris of the Labour Party, will be received by Acting President of the Republic, deputy President of the House of Representatives, Nicos Anastasiades.

    [07] European official - Euro Parliament - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jan 31 (CNA) - President of the Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left, (GUE - NGL) Francis Wurtz conveyed the support of the Group at the European Parliament for a bizonal, bicommunal federation in Cyprus and call ed for respect of UN resolutions on Cyprus and international law. Speaking after meeting today acting President of the Republic and President of the Democratic Rally Party, Nicos Anastasiades, Wurtz said "we support a solution which will maintain Cyprus with a single identity and personality".

    On his part, Anastasiades thanked Wurtz for his "positive and constructive support at the European Parliament in favour of a solution to the Cyprus problem and its European Union accession course".

    Geneva, Jan 31(CNA) - Efforts in the framework of the UN-led proximity talks, currently underway here, for a settlement in Cyprus aim at a continuous and intensive attempt as of May this year with a view to achieve a framework agreement, well inform ed sources have said.

    They also noted the personal interest and intervention of US President Bill Clinton towards this objective, describing it as a factor that could help in this direction.

    Geneva, Jan 31(CNA) - The government sees nothing worrying emerging from statements by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, relating to the possible prospect of recognising the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in the occupied north of Cyprus and statement s on the issues under discussion at the talks.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here Monday, after the end of the first day of UN-led proximity talks on Cyprus, that Annan "has not said anything that we should worry about or anything new".
