    [01] De Soto - Denktash

Geneva, Feb 3 (CNA) - Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash today said he considers a written statement by President Glafcos Clerides on the Cyprus peace effort as "disruptive", adding he has replied in writing and will deal with it when he considers the time fit.

In statements to the press after a 90-minute meeting with the UN Secretary General's special advisor for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, within the framework of proximity talks on the Cyprus question, Denktash claimed the Cyprus President issued the statement in a bid to make him leave the negotiating table but he will not do so.

[02] Iran - Cyprus - Combating drug trafficking

Nicosia, Feb 3 (CNA) - Officials from the Iranian airport authorities had visited Cyprus in January to look into ways of controlling drug trafficking from their country to the island, while another delegation will arrive here in the next few weeks for the same purpose, the embassy of Iran announced here today.

The Cyprus police have often found hard drugs on people coming here from Iran. Today a court in the southern coastal town of Larnaca issued an eight-day arrest warrant against an Iranian who tried to illegally bring in four kilos of heroin hidden in three Persian carpets.

[03] Holy Synod - Cyprus question

Nicosia, Feb 3 (CNA) - The Primate of the Church of Cyprus Archbishop Chrystostomos will invite President Glafcos Clerides and party leaders for an exchange of views on the Cyprus problem, following a request by the members of the Holy Synod that convened today.

The Holy Synod, comprising top church leaders, met to discuss the Cyprus question after statements made by the Kyrenia Bishop Pavlos that a bizonal, bicommunal federation envisaged as a settlement on the island will not safeguard the human rights of all citizens.

    [04] Philippine woman - Death

Nicosia, Feb 3 (CNA) - One of the Filipino women injured during a fatal road accident in the mountains last Sunday has passed away, the police announced today, refraining from making the name of the 47-year-old woman public until her relatives are notified.

She is the seventh person, including a three-year-old boy, who died when a minibus carrying 35 passengers crashed into a cement protective wall at a steep curve on the Platres-Moniatis road.

    by Maria Myles

Geneva, Feb 3 (CAN) -- The second round of UN-led proximity talks is expected to be concluded on Tuesday, according to well informed sources, who believe the next round of talks is likely to be a third round of proximity talks.

However they did not rule out the possibility of direct meetings between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders if sufficient progress is made. CAN/MM/MCH/2000 ENDS,

    By Costas Iordanides

Athens, Feb 3 (CNA) - Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou today expressed the hope Turkey's road towards joining the European Union, which sets new guidelines in relations between the two countries, creates new conditions for the settlement of the Cyprus question and the peaceful coexistence between Greece and Turkey.

Welcoming his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem to Athens, Papandreou said that despite differences on the Cyprus problem they must hope that rapprochement between their two countries will contribute towards a settlement and welcomed the Cyprus peace effort now underway in Geneva.
