2240:CYPPRESS:07 US State Department - Human rights - Cyprus report
Washington, Feb 25 (CNA) - A US report on human rights practices in Cyprus
ascertains that the so-called police in the Turkish occupied part of the
island abuse detainees' and suspects' rights and says the Turkish Cypriots
have not met their obligations towards the enclaved Greek Cypriots,
emanating from an agreement they signed a year after the 1974 Turkish
invasion. The 21-page report for 1999, released here today, notes the
various obstacles raised by the Turkish Cypriots to prevent bicommunal
contacts and refers to the economy on the island, claiming that the Greek
Cypriots impose an economic embargo against the Turkish Cypriots but
failing to mention a ruling by the European Court in Luxembourg which
regulates the export of produce from the occupied areas.
