CNA/RM/GP/2000 ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1320:CYPPRESS:05[05] President Clerides - OperationNicosia, May 3 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides will undergo a surgery for polyps in the large intestine, according to an official announcement, which says the President will be able to return to his duties in the next fortnight."On Friday, May 5, the President of the Republic will undergo surgery to remove polyps in the large intestine," the announcement reads, adding that "he will be in a position to undertake his duties fully in the next fifteen days". The President was admitted to a private clinic in the capital Nicosia on Monday for medical check-ups. According to the announcement, his meetings with foreign officials expected to visit the island within the framework of efforts to settle the Cyprus problem have been postponed. The press release refers to his scheduled meetings with UN Secretary- General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus Alfred Moses and Britain's special envoy for Cyprus Sir David Hannay. CNA GG/GP/2000ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1410:CYPPRESS:07[07] President Clerides - Doctor - StatementsNicosia, May 2 (CNA) -- The polyps in President Clerides' large intestine appears to be non-malignant, according to doctor Andreas Constantinides of the private clinic in which the President is being treated.Speaking to CNA Constantinides said the polyps must be removed through surgery, noting however that it is a simple operation and his doctors are very optimistic. "The polyps appears to be non-malignant," he added. Replying to questions, Constantinides said he will carry out the operation along with his colleague George Kyriakides. "In such cases we always want two surgeons to be present," he added. Doctor Constantindes said "we are very optimistic", describing the operation as "simple". According to an official announcement issued earlier, the President will undergo surgery on Friday, May 5, and is expected to return to his duties in the next fortnight.
