    [02] Tourism and travel statistics

    Nicosia, May 11 (CNA) - An increase of 5,4% was recorded in the number of arrivals to Cyprus in March 2000, compared to the corresponding month last year.

    According to a report issued by the government's Statistical Service, in March 2000 the number of arrivals covering all categories of travellers, including excursionists, reached 182.357, while for the period January- March 2000 arrivals reached 414.464, compared to 378.762 in the corresponding period of 1999, recording an increase of 9,4%.     [03] Agriculture Minister - Floating desalination unit

    Nicosia, May 11 (CNA) - Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Costas Themistocleous, today announced the creation of a floating desalination unit, which will operate as a transitional measure for two years, until the completion of the permanent units.

    Earlier, Themistocleous briefed President Glafcos Clerides on the water situation in Cyprus, noting that after the next cabinet meeting a complementary budget would be submitted to the House of Representatives to cover the cost of the floating unit.

    [04] UN - Cyprus peace talks - Consultations

    Nicosia, May 11 (CNA) - The date and place of the third round of talks aimed at reaching a settlement in Cyprus have not yet been confirmed, UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) spokeswoman Sarah Russell told CNA this afternoon.

    She said "there will be consultations with both sides and then the decision will be made".

    [05] Communications Minister - Accidents - Cyprus

    Nicosia, May 11 (CNA) -- Communications and Works Minister, Averof Neophytou has called on Cypriots to become more sensitive in the way they drive, repeating that Cyprus ranks third in Europe as far as road fatalities are concerned.

    Speaking at a press conference here Thursday, the Minister said that the only antidote to the increasing number of road fatalities is for people to become aware of the dangers, adding that the three fundamental reasons for road accidents in Cyprus are bad road conditions, the state of vehicles and the drivers' attitude.

    [06] Lebanese Premier - Cyprus - Middle East

    Nicosia, May 11 (CNA) -- Lebanon's Prime Minister Salim Hoss has called for Cyprus' reunification in accordance with United Nations resolutions.

    He said Cyprus is facing a similar problem to the situation his country is experiencing and that he and other Lebanese leaders are following developments in Cyprus very closely.

    [07] Former Cyprus President - Health improving

    London, May 11 (CNA) -- Former President of the Cyprus Republic, George Vassiliou, who underwent surgery yesterday in London to remove a benign brain tumour, was transferred from the ICU to a room today as his health is steadily improving, his personal physician said.

    According to Dr. Janet Stylianaki, Vassiliou underwent a CT scan today which showed the brain is functioning as normal and that Dr. Alan Crockard of the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, who performed the operation, was satisfied with the results of the scan. CNA KT/EC/MA 2000

    [09] UN - Cyprus talks - Official postponement

    New York, May 11 (CNA) -- The United Nations officially confirmed here Thursday that the Cyprus proximity talks scheduled for May 23, will be postponed due to President Glafcos Clerides' surgery earlier this month to remove a poly from his large intestine.

    A statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General said that that the UN hopes "to discuss dates and location for the resumption of the talks shortly".
