    Nicosia, May 26 (CNA) -- German President Johannes Rau expressed the hope that soon there will be a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.

    Rau made the statement during the presentation of the credentials of Cyprus' new ambassador to Germany, Christos Psilogenis.

    [04] Cyprus - Britain - Tourism

    London, May 26 (CNA) -- Tourism from Britain to Cyprus is expected to increase between 10-15 per cent both in the summer and winter seasons, compared to 1999, according to figures from the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) office in London.

    Speaking to CNA, CTO London director Orestis Rossides said reservations for the summer months, made by the end of April, showed an increase of 22 per cent while average tourist departures from Britain to overseas destinations are only two per cent.

    [05] US Navy Ship - Visit

    Nicosia, May 26 (CNA) -- The US Navy Ship USS Samuel B. Roberts, a 138- metre Oliver Hazard Perry Class Guided Missile Frigate, today arrives at the port of the southern town of Limassol.

    A US embassy press release said on this routine visit to Limassol the approximately 255-sailor crew will have the opportunity "to relax by enjoying Cyprus' beaches, tourist destinations and hospitality".

    [06] Verheugen - Enlargement - Target Dates

    Nicosia, May 26 (CNA) -- European Union Commissioner Guenter Verheugen has said that enlargement of the EU with the accession of the first new members is expected to take place during the period from 2003 to 2005.

    Speaking in Brussels on Wednesday to journalists from most of the 12 candidate states, including CNA Director Themis Themistocleous, the German Commissioner, who is responsible for enlargement, said "the window for accession for those countries that are absolutely ready is 2003 at the earliest and 2005 at the latest."

    [07] Deputies - COSAC meeting

    Nicosia, May 26 (CNA) -- A four member parliamentary delegation leaves Sunday for Lisbon, Portugal, to participate in a meeting of parliamentary European Affairs committees of European Union members, European Parliament and candidate countries.

    Tassos Papadopoulos, chairman of the House Foreign and European Union Affairs, and three deputies from other parties will be in the Portuguese capital for the two-day meeting, from 29 - 30 May.

    [08] Agriculture Minister - World congress

    Nicosia, May 26 (CNA) -- Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Minister Costas Themistocleous, heading a Cypriot delegation, leaves Sunday for Malmo, Sweden, to represent Cyprus at the first World Congress on the Environment.

    The meeting, organised by the UN Environment programme, will discuss the serious environmental problems the globe is facing at the beginning of the new century and ways to deal with them.

    [09] Cyprus - Intergovernmental Conference

    Brussels, May 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus' clear lead in the European Union (EU) accession negotiations was confirmed at today's Intergovernmental Conference during which negotiators met in Brussels.

    At the meeting, three new chapters opened concerning freedom of movement of persons, cooperation in the sectors of Justice and Home Affairs and provisions of economic and fiscal nature. The chapter of agriculture will possibly open on June 13, on a ministerial level.

    [10] 10th Meeting - European Banking Federation

    Nicosia, May 26 (CNA) -- The one-day 10th Meeting of the Associate Members of the European Banking Federation (EBF) took place in Nicosia today with an all-time record in participation.

    General Directors and representatives from eight regular members and 13 associate members took part in the meeting, which was hosted by the Association of Cyprus Commercial Banks (ACCB).
