[01] Government - Cyprus Peace talks

Nicosia, Jun 20 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides is prepared and ready to participate in meaningful talks to reach a settlement on the island for the whole of July, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today, calling on foreign envoys involved to act towards the Turkish side as its attitude does not leave much room for optimism that this new peace effort will bear fruit.

The National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus issue comprising parliamentary party leader, will convene on Monday, June 26, to discuss the situation, the spokesman announced.

[02] Spokesman - Rapporteur - Council of Europe

Nicosia, Jun 20 (CNA) - The Cyprus government has expressed its displeasure with the remarks and actions by a senior Council of Europe official, which many political circles on the island consider to be an affront to the legal government of the Republic.

Fending off criticism, Andras Barsony, Cyprus rapporteur at the Political Commitee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, said the Council recognises the Republic of Cyprus as the only legitimate state on the island and has no intention of changing this position.

[10] House President - Council of Europe Rapporteur

Nicosia, Jun 20 (CNA) - House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou has decided not to meet with the Cyprus rapporteur at the Political Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (CoE) Andras Barsony, because of the way the foreign official handled a visit to the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

Announcing his decision at a press conference this afternoon, Kyprianou said it is totally unacceptable for a CoE official to address Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash as "president" and other so-called officials by their illegal titles, and to also spend Monday night in the areas of the Republic occupied by Turkey since 1974.

    [11] EU Council - Conclusions

By Maria Chrysanthou Feira, Portugal, Jun 20 (CNA) - The European Council meeting in Santa Maria da Feira, marking the end of the six month Portuguese EU presidency, reaffirmed today its commitment to the enlargement process and noted with satisfaction the "substantive progress" achieved in the accession negotiations since the last meeting held in Helsinki last December, both with the first and second wave of candidate countries.

In the final conclusions reference to "enlargement", the EU reiterates its commitment to "maintain the momentum of the accession process" and notes that "all candidates will continue to be judged on the basis of their own merit" and that "in line with the principle of differentiation, it is possible for candidates to catch up with those which started their negotiations earlier".

    [12] AKEL - RTP - Meeting

Nicosia, June 20 (CNA) -- Left-wing AKEL party General Secretary Dimitris Christofias and President of the Turkish Cypriot Republican Turkish Party Mehmet Ali Talat have stressed the need for the leaders of both communities in Cyprus to respond to a call by the UN Secretary General for substantive and continuing talks aiming at the solution of the Cyprus question.

A press release issued by AKEL after today's meeting between Christofias and Talat in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, notes that both parties reiterated their common stance for "a just and peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem to the benefit of both communities" which would "exclude any form of secession or creation of a separate state".
