[01] Cyprus: Twenty-six years of division

Nicosia, Jul 20 (CNA) -- Cyprus remembers and pays tribute today to all those who lost their life in defence of the Republic during the 1974 invasion of the island by Turkey, whose troops still illegally occupy 37 per cent of Cyprus territory despite repeated UN Security Council resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

At the same time, in the Turkish-occupied northern part of the island Ankara's puppet regime is organising military parades and Turkey continues with its provocative violations of the Republic's airspace, despite the fact that UN-led proximity talks aiming at a substantive dialogue to lead to a Cyprus settlement are under way.

    Greek leadership - Turkish invasion

Nicosia, Jul 20 (CNA) -- The Greek leadership reaffirmed its firm support to Cyprus' efforts for a settlement of its protracted political problem in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and to assist in every way the island's bid for accession to the European Union.

In a message on the bleak anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island, Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis noted that for the complete normalisation of relations between Greece and Turkey a comprehensive, just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem has to be reached.

    Government Spokesman - Turkish invasion

Nicosia, Jul 20 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides would raise the issue of recent Turkish provocations on Monday when the UN-led proximity talks will resume in Geneva.

Speaking after a commemoration service in Nicosia for those killed during the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island, Papapetrou noted that despite a plea by the UN Secretary-General to the two sides to avoid any actions that could provoke the other, the Turkish side proceeded with the greater number of violations of the Republic's airspace than on brevious occasions.

[05] Relatives of missing persons - Appeal

Nicosia, Jul 20 (CNA) - The committee of relatives of undeclared prisoners and persons missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus has once again appealed to the international community to put an end to this tragic problem, noting that an agreement reached between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides to this end has not yet been implemented.

In a letter handed today to the ambassadors of the five UN permanent member- states here, the committee expresses disappointment with the non- implementation of UN resolutions on the missing persons in Cyprus and the lack of progress in determining their fate, something that "must be a matter of concern to all those who could help and failed to do so."
