[01] Council of Europe - Loizidou case - Resolution

Nicosia, Jul 25 (CNA) - The Council of Europe Committee of Ministers yesterday adopted a resolution on the Titina Loizidou case "deeply deploring the fact that, to date, Turkey has still not complied with its obligations under the judgement delivered by the European Court of Human Rights" and urges Turkey to do so.

In the resolution, which was adopted by the Committee of Ministers at the 716th meeting of the Ministers' Deputies, the Committee declares that "the refusal of Turkey to execute the judgement of the Court demonstrates a manifest disregard for its international obligations, both as a High Contracting Party to the Convention and as a member state of the Council of Europe". [02] Loizidou case - Resolution - Lawyer

Nicosia, Jul 25 (CNA) - The resolution on the Titina Lozidou case adopted yesterday by the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers is the second step in the effort towards compelling Turkey to comply with its obligations under the judgement delivered by the European Court of Human Rights.

This was stated today by Loizidou's lawyer, Achilleas Demetriades, who noted that Turkey questions the credibility of the Council of Europe with her behaviour and expressed certainty that in the end Turkey will be obliged to comply with the Court's judgement. CNA/ITS/GG/RG/2000

[03] Turkish occupied areas - Demonstrations

Nicosia, Jul 25 (CNA) - Some 200 people began a sit-in protest today in front of the so-called "prime minister's" office in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic, demanding the release of dozens of persons, arrested during a violent protest yesterday and noting that Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, was planning a coup.

AFP reported that more people were joining the demonstration with every passing minute, while large numbers of illegal "police", some in riot gear, kept a close watch.

by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Jul 25 (CNA) - The UN chief's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, met today in Geneva with Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, in the context of UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem, aimed at paving the way for substantive negotiations leading to a comprehensive settlement.

Speaking after the meeting, which lasted about three-and-a-half hours, Denktash said that they began elaborating on ideas submitted to the two sides by de Soto, before the talks adjourned earlier this month, and noted that the Turkish Cypriot side gave its response to these thoughts.
