    [03] Cyprus - Memorials - Defence Minister

Nicosia, Aug 13 (CNA) - Defence Minister, Socratis Hasikos, said today that "we are working silently and methodically for the strengthening of our defence", in order "to shield our homeland". Speaking during the 36th memorial of those killed during the battles in north- west Tylliria with Turkish fighters in August 1964, Hasikos said that the government's ambition is to strengthen the National Guard, so that it can "protect the free areas of the Republic" from Turkey and "give the legal government of the Republic of Cyprus the opportunity to negotiate for a just solution to the Cyprus problem with sureness".
