[01] House President - Cyprus problem - Talks

by Maria Chrysanthou New York, Sep 2 (CNA) -- President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou, has said there are no positive signs about the outcome of a fourth round of UN-led proximity talks to begin in New York on September 12, pointing out that no pressure has been exerted on Turkey by either the United States or the European Union in order to abandon its intransigent stance in efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Speaking at a press conference in the fringes of the Conference of Presiding Officers of National Parliaments held in New York, Kyprianou said he was pleased by the numerous meetings he had with his foreign counterparts, which yesterday included the Chairman of the Russian State Duma and the Speaker of the Syrian People's Assembly.

    [02] Britain - Foreign Office - Cyprus - Strovilia

London, Sep 2 (CNA) - A Foreign Office Spokeswoman has denied reports according to which Britain condones the measures taken by the Turkish troops in Strovilia.

"Such an interpretation of the meeting between officials of the Bases and the Turkish Cypriots would be mistaken", she said, adding that "we do not condone the measures taken by the Turkish side and we support any steps the (UN) peacekeeping force may deem necessary to take to return to the status quo ante".

[03] AKEL General Secretary - Stockholm - Conference

Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) - Left-wing AKEL General Secretary, Demetris Christofias, said today that one of the reasons "for the perpetuation of the Cyprus problem is the tolerance and covering that the NATO factor and particularly the Americans and the British offer to the policy of Ankara and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash".

Speaking at the seminar "The just solution of the Cyprus problem and its positive influence on security and peace in the Eastern Mediterranean", organised in the context of International Conference of Progressive and Left Parties of Europe, taking place in Stockholm, Christofias said that "the international factor can and should play a very important role in order to create the preconditions for a solution of the Cyprus problem".
