    [02] Cyprus - Bicommunal festival

    Nicosia, Sep 5 (CNA) -- Organisers of a bicommunal festival, to take place on Sunday at the Ledra Palace hotel, in the UN-controlled buffer zone in the divided capital Nicosia, said here today at a press conference they hope the festival will be a big success and just the beginning of a series of such events.

    The "Festival of mutual understanding" is organised by four Greek Cypriot parties (left-wing AKEL, right-wing DISI (Democratic Rally), EDI (United Democrats) and KISOS (Sosial Democrats Movement) and three Turkish Cypriot parties (Communal Liberation Party, Patriotic Union Movement and Republican Turkish Party).     [04] Commerce Minister - Cyprus Airways

    Nicosia, Sep 5 (CNA) - Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister, Nicos Rolandis, said today that tourist arrivals this year are expected to reach 1,7 million, while income from tourism is expected to be 1,17 billion pounds this year.

    Addressing the two-day "Cyprus Airways Sales Conference", which started in Nicosia this morning, Rolandis stressed the need to upgrade the quality of the Cyprus tourist product.

    [05] Health Minister - AIDS - Study

    Limassol, Sep 5 (CNA) - Health Minister, Frixos Savvides, today announced a study to be carried out in the Limassol district regarding AIDS, noting that the purpose of the research is "to review and adjust the state's activities against HIV, in the context of the national AIDS programme".

    The study, entitled "Knowledge, Perceptions and Behaviour on AIDS, Sex and Sexually Transmitted Diseases in the Town and District of Limassol (2000/2001)", is funded by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and has been classified as one of the best proposed studies among Eastern Mediterranean countries.

    [06] Attorney General - Fourth inter-state application

    By Maria Myles Nicosia, Sep 5 (CNA) - The European Court of Human Rights of the Council of Europe will hear Cyprus' case against Turkey for human rights violations on the island on 20 September before it rules on the case, Attorney General Alecos Markides has said.

    In an interview with CNA prior to his departure tomorrow for Strasbourg for a meeting on Thursday with Court President Luzius Wildhaber, he said "everything will be tried from the start, this is not an appeal but a referral of a case before the Court of all the issues raised in our application".

    [07] UN Secretary-General - Press conference - Millennium Summit

    by Maria Chrysanthou New York, Sep 5 (CNA) - UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, today expressed the need for substantive negotiations on the Cyprus problem and not just talks for the sake of talking.

    Speaking at a press conference for the UN Millennium Summit, Annan said "we will press hard for a discussion on the core issues, we will want to get into the substance", adding that "we have gone beyond the stage where we get together to have talks about talks and I think we now really have to push the substance".
