    US President - President Clerides - House President

    New York, Sep 8 (CNA) -- US President Bill Clinton has assured Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides that he has been working for Cyprus.

    "I have been working for you," Clinton told Clerides during a brief conversation at the Waldorf Astoria hotel, where both leaders are staying, on the occasion of the UN Millennium Summit.

    President Clerides - American-Jewish Committee

    New York, Sep 8 (CNA) -- Members of the American-Jewish Committee have expressed their interest in a Cyprus settlement and said their contribution to the peace process is through Committee honorary president Alfred Moses, who is also the US Presidential Emissary on Cyprus.

    They also expressed the conviction that Moses will do the right thing.

    Cyprus Rally - Start

    Limassol, Sep 8 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Rally started here today with the first car driven by Finland's Marcus Grongolm of Peugeot, currently leading the Drivers' World Championship.

    With 52 participants, the Cyprus Rally 2000, which for the first time is included in the FIA's World Championship, comprises three legs, totaling 1250,79 kilometres, with 23 special stages all driven on gravel.

    Clinton - Sezer - UN Secretary-General

    New York, Sep 8 (CNA) -- Turkey's President Ahmet Necdet Sezer was invited to back real negotiations on Cyprus to begin and to shift from procedure to substance with a view to seeing a settlement of the protracted Cyprus question.

    The calls came at two meetings Sezer had here on the sidelines of the UN Millennium Summit with US President Bill Clinton and UN Secretary- General Kofi Annan.

    Greek Premier - Press Conference

    New York, Sep 8 (CNA) -- Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis said he wants to see action on Cyprus and not words any more, adding that he told US President Bill Clinton and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan of the need to settle the Cyprus question.

    "I am satisfied with what I heard but because I have heard this many times, we want to see action," Simitis told a press conference here Thursday.

    UN Secretary-General - Report - Cyprus

    New York, Sep 8 (CNA) -- The UN is working to develop a conceptual framework for future progress on Cyprus, according to a report by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the work of the organisation.

    "A continuous process of proximity talks involving Glafcos Clerides and Rauf Denktash is under way under my auspices. With the assistance of my Special Adviser, attempts are being made to develop a conceptual framework for future progress," the report said.

    [07] Cyprus Airways - Airbus - Return to base

    Larnaca, Sep 8 (CNA) - A Cyprus Airways Airbus A-320, which was on a flight to Milan with 165 passengers and a seven-member crew on board, returned to base today, due to a technical problem.

    The national air-carrier's Spokesman, Tasos Angeli, said that one of the three hydraulic systems of the plane failed, noting that one of the systems is in use during any flight and that the other two are reserves.

    [08] Cyprus Rally 2000

    Limassol, Sep 8 (CNA)-- Several cars withdrew from the very first special stages of the Cyprus Rally, currently led by Ford driver Carlos Sainz on the overall results.

    Marcus Gronholm of Peugeot left the race during special stage 6 due to electrical problems after finishing second on special stage 5, just 6.8 seconds behind Richard Burns of Subaru.

    [09] Vassiliou - Israel - Peace Centre

    Nicosia, Sep 8 (CNA) - Cyprus former President George Vassiliou will fly to Tel Aviv on Sunday to take part in the third annual meeting of the Shimon Peres Peace Centre board, entitled "Challenges to Peace in a Period of Globalisation".

    During his stay in Israel, Vassiliou will visit Ramallah, where he will meet Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
