[02] UN Secretary-General - Cyprus talks - Statement to parties

by Maria Myles New York, Sep 13 (CNA) - UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, said today that the equal status of the parties must and should be recognised explicitly in the comprehensive settlement to be reached on the Cyprus problem, noting that each side represents itself and no-one else.

In a statement he read out to President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, during separate meetings he had with them on today's first day of the fourth round of proximity talks to solve the Cyprus problem, Annan noted that the comprehensive settlement must enshrine a new partnership on which to build a better future in peace, security and prosperity on a united island.

[03] UN Special Adviser - Cyprus talks - Press conference

by Maria Myles New York, Sep 13 (CNA) - UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, intends to take a more active role in the current round of UN-led talks by joining them whenever appropriate with a view to move ahead, but also said that he is acting within the framework of UN Resolution 1250, which takes full consideration of relevant Security Council resolutions, his Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, said here today.

De Soto also said the precise definition of the equal status of the parties, engaged in the negotiating process, will have to be defined at the end of the process and noted that the UN does not view face-to-face talks as a necessity nor is it pressing for such talks.
