    [01] Russian Foreign Minister - Departure

    Larnaca, Oct 12 (CNA) - Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov left Cyprus for talks in Athens after his official visit here, reassuring the government and the people of Cyprus that Moscow will work to strengthen the UN peace negotiations and reiterating his government's firm backing of the good offices mission of the UN Secretary-General.

    Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said Ivanov's presence on the island was a gesture that helps promote closer bilateral ties and cooperation, noting that the Cyprus peace effort was the focus of his discussions during which matters of mutual interest were also on the agenda.

    [03] US top envoy - Visit - Postponed

    Nicosia, Oct 12 (CNA) - US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus Ambassador Alfred Moses has postponed his scheduled visit to the island, a spokesman for the American embassy here told CNA today.

    "Ambassador Moses has postponed his visit to Cyprus until after the Geneva talks in November due to scheduling conflicts in the region," the spokesman explained.

    [04] Cyprus - Middle East

    Nicosia, Oct 12 (CNA) - Cyprus, reiterating its sorrow at the resurgence of violence in Middle East, has told the UN that solutions to problems must be fair and acceptable to the people concerned, warning that if the contrary applies such settlements would come be problematic.

    Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Sotos Zackheos has called on powerful parties to adopt a more understanding attitude towards people who suffer under occupation and seek to achieve their legitimate rights.

    [05] President Clerides - New British Bases Commander

    Nicosia, Oct 12 (CNA) -- The new British Bases Commander in Cyprus, Air Vice Marshall Bill Rimmer, today paid an introductory call on President Glafcos Clerides, during which they discussed their shared interest in the sea and boats as well as their service in the British Royal Air Force (RAF).

    The British Commander was accompanied by British High Commissioner to Cyprus Edward Clay.

    [06] House of Representatives - Cyprus question - Debate

    Nicosia, Oct 12 (CNA) -- The plenary of the Cyprus 56-seat House of Representatives will convene on Saturday, October 21, to discuss the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, parliament President Spyros Kyprianou announced today after a meeting of parliamentary party leaders.

    Kyprianou said all parties agreed on holding an open discussion under the title "The latest developments in the Cyprus issue", describing it as "particularly important".
