Nicosia, Oct 20 (CNA) - The current circumstances provide the most
favourable time for progress towards a Cyprus settlement, according to
German State Minister Christoph Zoepel said here today, after talks with
Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, adding that the UN has opened a
"window of opportunity" with the ongoing proximity talks.
Zoepel praised President Glafcos Clerides "responsible and careful" stance
at the talks, and said UN moves, US interest to solve the Cyprus problem
and Turkey's wish for closer links with Europe have contributed to an
improved climate at the talks.

Nicosia, Oct 20 (CNA) - Carla del Ponte, Prosecutor of the International
Tribunal for War Crimes in the Hague, is having consultations with the
Cypriot authorities in connection with investigations to bring to trial
suspects from former Yugoslavia wanted in connection with crimes against
humanity.
"The government of Cyprus has expressed the will to cooperate totally with
us in its international obligations that exist for the country," she said
after a meeting with Justice and Public Order Minister Nikos Kosis which
she described as "very fruitful."

[03] Military Manoeuvres - President Clerides
Nicosia, Oct 20 (CNA) – As President Glafcos Clerides watched the annual
military exercises of the National Guard unfold today, Turkish fighters
harassed again Greek jets on their way to Cyprus to participate in the
manoeuvres.
"We can be proud of our armed forces," the President said, as he watched
the manoeuvres.

[04] EU Commissioner - Turkey
Brussels, Oct 20 (CNA) – Turkey cannot possibly expect to start accession
negotiations with the European Union at the end of next year, European
Union Commissioner responsible for enlargement Gunter Verheugen has said.
He also said Turkey first has to satisfy fully the political criteria of
Copenhagen and abolish capital punishment before it starts negotiating with
the EU.
