  • [02] Cyprus - UN Secretary-General - Letter Nicosia, Dec 29 (CNA) -- The government of the Republic of Cyprus has appealed to the UN Secretary-General to use all his influence and intensify effort to secure the immediate release of abducted Greek Cypriot Panicos Tziakourmas, who is illegally detained in the Turkish-occupied part of Nicosia by the occupation regime. The government also considers that Kofi Annan has to put pressure on Turkey, which continues to maintain a 30,000 strong occupation army in Cyprus' northern part, to achieve his release and describes the abduction "a provocative act tantamount to hostage taking and a terrorist act."
