    [01] Missing Persons - Exhumation process

    by Maria Myles Nicosia, Jan 10 (CNA) - As more identifications of exhumed remains are expected to be announced early this year through the combined work of two scientific teams of experts from the US-based Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) and the Cyprus Institute of Genetics and Neurology, work is well underway for the preparation of the list of Greek Cypriots and Greek nationals, killed during or as a result of the military coup and the Turkish invasion that followed in the summer of 1974, that has left the country divided.

    This week, the PHR anthropologist who led the team of scientists exhuming and examining remains from two Nicosia cemeteries, Dr William Haglund, returns to the island to carry the work forward in conjunction with the Institute experts and the government working group for the exhumations.     [02] Turkish Cypriot - Drugs - Court

    Larnaca, Jan 10 (CNA) - Turkish Cypriot Omer Tekogul, 42, who has been arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs, was taken today before the Assize Court, convening in Larnaca.

    Tekogul, from the village of Pyla, faces seven charges relating to drug trafficking after two kilos of heroin were found in his possession. He pleaded not guilty. CNA/MAN/RM/RG/2001

    [03] House of Commons - Tziakourmas - Early day motion

    London, Jan 10 (CNA) - An early day motion tabled yesterday by six Labour MPs in the House of Commons, calls upon the British government "to make every effort to cause the immediate release of Panicos Tziakourmas" who was abducted by Turkish troops in December and is being illegally detained in the areas of Cyprus under Turkish occupation.

    The motion calls on the British government to make very effort for the "immediate release" of Tziakourmas, who is being illegally held for alleged drug possession. CNA/KI/RM/RG/2001

    [04] Cyprus President - Former Lebanese President - Condolences book

    Nicosia, Jan 10 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides today signed the condolences book for the death of former President of Lebanon Charles Helou, at the Lebanese Embassy in Nicosia.

    House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou will sign the book tomorrow. CNA/RG/RM/2001

    [05] British envoy - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jan 10 (CNA) - Britain's Special Representative for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay, arrived on the island today for talks, in view of a new round of UN-led peace talks, aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus.

    This afternoon, Sir David met with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and will be received tomorrow by President Glafcos Clerides. CNA/RG/RM/2001

    [06] Council of Europe - Greek Cypriot - Abduction

    Nicosia, Jan 10 (CNA) - Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, Christoforos Yiangou, today deplored the abduction and continuing illegal detention of Greek Cypriot Panicos Tziakourmas by the Turkish occupation forces on the island.

    Yiangou told the Council of Europe Committee of Deputy Ministers that Tziakourmas was abducted within a British Bases area and that this created responsibilities for Britain to make every possible effort for his immediate and unconditional release. CNA/RG/RM/2001
