    Larnaca, Mar 20 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot Omer Tekogul, who was found guilty on seven drug-related charges last week, was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment by the Assize Court.

    Police took very stringent security measures in and around the area of the court and TV cameras were prohibited from filming.

    [02] Cyprus - EU - Turkey

    Nicosia, Mar 20 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government expects the European Union to stand firm on its decisions regarding Turkey's obligations towards Cyprus and invite Ankara to amend the text of its national programme on EU accession, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    Noting that the programme does nor correspond to EU decisions in Helsinki or Nice, the spokesman said Nicosia and Athens will inform Brussels and others of their assessment of the programme with a view to have the text altered.

    [03] EU official - Cyprus question

    Brussels, Mar 20 (CNA) - European Union commissioner responsible for enlargement Gunter Verheugen will meet in Geneva next week with the UN Secretary General's special envoy for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, who chairs the talks aimed at reaching a settlement on the island.

    The meeting was made known by the EU's chief negotiator in the accession talks with Cyprus, Leopold Maurer, during a session in Brussels yesterday organised by the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee to discuss issues relating to the accession negotiations.

    [04] Turkish Cypriot - Assize Court - Sentence

    Larnaca, Mar 20 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot Omer Tekogul, found guilty on seven drug-related charges last week, was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment by the Assize Court that convened today in the southeastern coastal town of Larnaca

    In its six-page decision the Court says that in handing out the sentence it took into consideration the fact that Tekogul had in his possession and supplied two under cover policemen a large quantity of drugs, mainly heroin, considered as hard drugs.
