    [02] Cyprus Chief EU Negotiator - Ireland

    Nicosia, Apr 4 (CNA) -- Head of Cyprus' negotiating team for European Union accession George Vassiliou is on a three-day official visit to Ireland where he will meet the Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Brian Cowen, the Speaker of the Parliament Seamus Pattison, the Chairman of the Senate Brian Mullooly and others.

    Vassiliou will also give a lecture at the Institute of European Affairs of Dublin on the issue of "Cyprus and the European Union".

    [04] Cyprus - World Council of Churches - Human Rights

    Nicosia, Apr 4 (CNA) -- The Commission of Churches on International Affairs has called for the respect of human rights of the people of Cyprus and a speedy implementation of the relevant UN resolutions, John Rumbiak of the Institute for Human Rights, Study and Advocacy has said on behalf of the Commission of Churches on International Affairs of the World Council of Churches.

    Speaking before the UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, Rumbiak said the Council "has repeatedly expressed its belief that the continuation of the status quo in Cyprus that dates back to the invasion and occupation of 37 percent of the island by Turkish armed forces, is unacceptable".
