    AKEL Party leader - Interview

    by Myria Antoniadou

Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) - General Secretary of left-wing AKEL Party Dimitris Christofias believes that the UN Security Council should assess the Cyprus peace effort and put the blame for the impasse where it belongs, exerting pressure on the Turkish side to return to negotiations based on the international organisation's resolutions.

In an interview with CNA in view of the upcoming parliamentary elections, Christofias said that the Greek Cypriot side should clarify what it wants for Cyprus and take up an international campaign. On relations between Greece and Turkey he believes that Ankara is not responding positively to efforts by Athens to improve relations.

Spokesman - Turkey - European court decision

Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- The government considers that Cyprus and Turkey have "an excellent opportunity" to overcome their differences and seek a solution of the Cyprus question, in the light of a European Court of Human Rights judgment that considers Ankara guilty of human rights abuses in Cyprus.

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou expressed the conviction that Ankara would see the ruling as a means to enter a new era that would lead the country into new neighbourly ties with its neighbours, including Cyprus.
