    Nicosia, Aug 10 (CNA) -- Excavations that have been conducted at the area of ancient Idalion have brought to light several antiquities of the 4th century B.C., including a thymiatenion.

    According to an official press release the 2001 excavation season that has been completed, provided exclusive evidence for the presence of the Palace of Idalion on the northwest slope of the Hill of Ampileri, the west Acropolis of Idalion.

    [02] Cyprus - Research and Development activities

    Nicosia, Aug 10 (CNA) -- Research and development expenditure in Cyprus recorded an increase of 15% in the year 1999 that corresponds to 0,25% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) compared to 0,23% of GDP in 1998.

    According to official statistics released today, the share of the GDP of Cyprus devoted to research and development activities continues to be quite low compared to other countries. CNA/RM/GP/2001

    [03] Cyprus - Foreign Trade - Statistics

    Nicosia, Aug 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus total imports have recorded an increase for the period between January - March 2001 reaching 614,6 million Cyprus pounds, as compared to 507,9 m. pounds the same period in 2000. (one Cyprus pound trades 1.5 US dollars)

    According to official statistics released today, total exports recorded a decrease, from 144,6 m. pounds in 2000 to 143,9 m. pounds in the first three months of 2001. As a result, the trade deficit accounted for 470,7 m. pounds compared to 363,3 m. pounds in January-March 2000. CNA/RM/GP/2001

    [04] Cyprus Church - National heritage - Occupied areas

    Nicosia, Aug 10 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Church has strongly denounced the continued destruction of the island's cultural and religious heritage by the illegal regime in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkish troops since 1974.

    In a press release, the Holy Synod, the island's supreme religious body, calls on foreign governments and international organisations to take all necessary measures "to end the Turkish outrageous acts, which flagrantly violate the human rights of our people." CNA/RM/GP/2001
